Description
A Door to the Mists is a first-person action-adventure (featuring traversal, exploration, puzzles, and sparse combat) in a heroic fantasy setting.
Seek through desolate, dangerous places, whether ruined city, forgotten tomb, or deep cave. Climb, leap, and clamber up ledges, branches, and more. Fight the living, dead, and stranger-still that stand between you and your hope. Solve the problems and puzzles that bar your way. Discover the stories of those who once dwelt in these places.
Adventure in these places, find the clues that lead you onwards, and discover whether there truly is a door to the mists...
The story is one of an adventurer who has long yearned to explore the misty other plane of her world. But it is well known that only magic-users can enter that place, and taking up magic would require a heavy price: the sacrifice of her adventuring, her very reason for wanting to enter.
Then, one day, she hears a story in a bar, of a lost city, and a door that leads directly into the mist-world...
History
The project that would become A Door to the Mists started out rather larger: an "adventuring simulator", with semi-open gameplay, a wide variety of levels, and separate "regions" (read: hubs) in which levels could be found, and between which the player could travel.
This, however, was rather too big, given various constraints. So some scaling back was done, and, after at least one false start, the story of A Door to the Mists was found.
(The setting wasn't new--Ian had previous written a short story set there. While somewhat geographically removed, that story shares some elements with the game--including entry to the mist-world being an important plot-point.)
With a reduced (but still somewhat... ambitious) scope, a new story, and an interesting setting, Ian set about building A Door to the Mists. And so it has gone for the past few years, and so the game has slowly built up into what it is today.
Features
- "Universal Mantling" (ledge-climbing): if it's within reach, flat enough, and has enough space (and is solid, and not trying to kill you), you should be able to climb onto it.
- One-on-one, cunning, tactically-minded combat; inspired by Quest for Glory and Die by the Sword (and perhaps other games, too).
- Puzzle-solving, both in-level and minigame.
- Explore ruins, caves, and tombs; seek out paths to lead you onward.
- Lore and stories to be discovered in the places to which the adventure takes you.
